A Curry or Two to Remember

Rumor has it that the curry pots have already started simmering in preparation for our Wednesday night feast at the Nagy home in Craighall Park.
The address is 9 Roxburgh Ave (sometimes it has an -e at the end) in Craighall Park. The time is 6.30 for 7.00 pm and it'll be a good idea to bring some wine with. If there is any left over (although there seldom is after New Dawn parties) we can keep it for further functions or for the Barrows of Booze at the Golf Day.
Julian is insisting on Sari's, turbans etc as dress code. We'll see!
Curry for Africa
To recap: Steve is preparing a beef curry, Julian a lamb curry, Lucille a South Indian vegetable curry and I'll do a Chicken Tikka Masala.
Joan and Graham are bringing caulirice for the Banters, Carin is supplying the ingredients for the sambals, Judy Symons will bring naan bread and the Nagys will also supply basmati rice. Carol is seeing to dessert.
Anyone who turns up for the Wednesday morning meeting will have egg all over their face, let alone curry, as there is no meeting!

Sponsoring club
While we were going about our business, Jankees Sligcher was representing the club and district in the best possible way, as he so often does these days.
This time it was to represent New Dawn as one of the two sponsoring clubs for the latest Rotary club in District 9400, called Midrand NexGen (even their spelling is next generation!). They are the first new club in the district since Johannesburg New Dawn was chartered in January 2009. Boksburg Lake is the main sponsoring club.
Jankees Sligcher admires Damian Lahoud's presidential gong. Damian
is the founding president of the new club
The new club has an average age in the thirties, which makes them by far the youngest in the district and probably one of the very youngest worldwide.
Damian Lahoud, also district chair for Rotaract, is the founding president of the New Generations club.

DGE Jankees welcomed the chartering of the new club and says he's particularly happy to be able to welcome so many bright young people to his district when he takes office as District Governor on 1st July.

Sailor Malan II
Talking of meetings, last week saw the concluding part of John Myburgh's talk on Sailor Malan and followed his political career after the Second World War until his death in 1963, a victim of Parkinson's.
Sue Peiser, an ex-member of New Dawn, accompanied John Myburgh to his talk
He outlined how Malan served as private secretary to sir Harry Oppenheimer at Anglo American until he decided to go farming outside Kimberley in 1950. In the years that followed he was heavily involved with the Torch Commando, which was created to oppose the removal of coloured voters from the voters' roll. He died at age 53 and rated a major obituary in The Times of London for his feats as a Battle of Britain pilot.

Blanket drive
The team were at it in Parkview again on Saturday morning and pushed our total up to a whopping  R10000, or 142 blankets.

A rather colorful George Knoke, well-known in Auckland Park and surrounding suburbs, was one of the donors. Here Linda thanks him.
Many thanks to everyone who took part in collecting money for blankets. We'll put the order in as soon as possible so that the blankets can get to Woodside Sanctuary and the 5Cees during what seems to be becoming quite a cold winter.
