Prizes Galore for the Golf Day

It's time to start perfecting that golf swing for the players brave enough to tackle the Parkview Golf Club on Friday for the annual Rotary Club of Johannesburg New Dawn Golf Day.

To date there are about 20 four-balls playing and a big surprise awaits them with a host of great prizes in various categories for the winner(s).

The first prize is a Clicgear golf pushcart

First prize, thanks to Carol Stier, is four Clicgear golf pushcarts. Carol also added to a very generous donation by Hannes Dressler all the way from Dubai, to ensure a second prize of 4 bottles of  Lagavulin single malt whisky, known as one of the premier whiskies of the world.

There'll be hampers and another major haul of prizes from Marathon tools such as sets of pliers,  Homeowners toolkits and other handy items for around the house such as four hosepipes. Thanks very much to Carl Schmidt and the boys for their generosity. Carl says it's not so that the hosepipes and toolkits are for the winning ladies team.

The organisers of the golf day are looking to members to bring even more prizes, which don't have to be large items. Four of anything, from boxes of chocolates, sweets, soaps and bottles of wine can go into hampers. Adele Dabbs, who is organising that the hampers get made up, has also asked for old platters, which don't have to be four matching ones, to give the hampers a bit of weight.

                                          Prizes galore for the winners

And of course don't forget contributions to the barrow of booze, the always popular first prize in the raffle, which still has capacity for quite a few more bottles.

A few last minute hole sponsors would also help the cause immeasurably.

This is traditionally our major fundraiser of the year and we as a club need to squeeze every bit of advantage out of it that we can to benefit children in need. The money this year is earmarked for bursaries and the more we can raise, the more we can help. This is your club everybody, so pitch in any way you can.

The meeting last week was mainly about the golf day and an opportunity to welcome Nick Bell, an honorary member of New Dawn, back to Johannesburg from the UK.

Paul Channon has indicated that it would be possible for New Dawn to channel donations for bursaries through the AEC, which could create a channel through which companies and individuals can be issued with Section 18A certificates for tax purposes.

After the meeting PDG Jankees Sligcher and PP Carol Stier attended the handover of 1150 Tutu Desks at the Lion Park Primary School near Cosmo City along with DG Koekie Makunyane Quashie, her husband PDG Kobla Quashie, DGN George Senosha and PDG Shirley Downie.

The Tutu Foundation aims to distribute 20 million Tutu Desks to schoolchildren all over Africa by 2025.

DG Koekie will attend the New Dawn meeting on Wednesday, her official visit to the club for the year. It is a sign of respect to the DG , who is our link to Rotary International, that as many members as possible attend the meeting, even if it is online.

Personal attendance gives you the opportunity to meet and network with the DG and her entourage of course.

Dates to Diarise: The meeting the following week will be an evening meeting on Tuesday, 25 October (the Rotary Club of Rosebank got in first and booked the Parkview club for a quiz evening). The speaker next Tuesday will be the Comrades marathon legend Bruce Fordyce.

Lucille Blumberg will be the speaker at the meeting on Wednesday, 2 November and the following week, Wednesday 9 November will take the form of a late afternoon garden party at President Julian Nagy's home in Craighall Park to mark his birthday.

A Thought for the Week: Maybe all one can do is hope to end up with the right regrets. - Arthur Miller (1915 - 2005)
