Of Healers, Presidents and Youth Leaders

Beate Schulte-Brader is new to Rotary, having joined the Rotary Club of Johannesburg North Central a few weeks ago. This is a club with which Johannesburg New Dawn has had a long association. She is married to Jobst, a long-time member of that club.
Beate visited New Dawn along with Brian Skosana and Catherine Namono to help finalist arrangements for the Health Days, which the two clubs did in partnership this year, as we have done in the past.

It turned out that Beate is a member of the PAM Association (Professional About Minerals) and the Traditional Health Organization and in that capacity has agreed to be our speaker this week.
She has a BSc degree in Biology and describes herself as an Ethno Medicine Practitioner.
If that doesn't make you curious, nothing will!
Catherine Namono of the Rotary Club of Johannesburg North Central paid a visit
to talk about the RFHD and volunteer her services

Beate follows John Myburgh, SC, who has said he will gladly come back, probably in the new year, to talk more about the American election, the new president and the election process.
As at his previous visit, his talk last week was insightful, witty and obviously very well prepared and researched. And he thinks Hillary Clinton will win!

Debbie De Vries-Van Buuren and husband Henk van Buuren were also visitors. Debbie is set to join the club soon as our 24th member

RYLA
It has been mentioned before, but for those who missed the news, the club sent two children from the Dominican Convent to the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy camp in Benoni last month and, as usual, they thoroughly enjoyed their weekend.
The two were Tshegofatso Mantsho and Mario Antonio.
Mario wrote in his report back after the camp: "The camp was ... an unforgettable experience Meeting new people with similar goals and aspirations was truly motivating and refreshing. Thank you does not give enough credit to the hospitality of the facilitators and the RYLA members that made the camp feel like home."
Tshegofatso says "to say the weekend was awesome would be an understatement. At first, I was intimidated by the thought of being surrounded by new faces but once I settled in, I realized that the weekend would be an experience that I would eternally hold dear in my heart.
"Being surrounded by people who understand you is heartwarming. You feel at home and friendship can't be built more easily. That is the environment that is created by the RYLA facilitators. I hope you continue providing this opportunity for young leaders to discover themselves and thus bring great change in the world to come."
Very eloquently put by both, and a testament to their quality education at Dominican. We also owe a vote of thanks to the Rotary Club of Springs for organizing the event.

Dates to Diarise
There are a number of upcoming events that various members must take note of:
Tuesday, 1 November: Briefing for the Macsteel Cycle Race at 7pm at the Dinwiddie Primary School in Germiston.
Sunday, 6 November: The Macsteel Cycle Race. Because of my current health problems I'm unlikely to be able to attend either event and we'll have to make another plan.
Saturday, 12 November is DGR Christopher Thompson'e second Regional 2 meeting for the relevant clubs. It's at the Douglasdale Retirement Village and board members are encouraged to go. I'll ask for a show of hands on Wednesday and send the relevant details to those who can make it.
Saturday, 19 November: Foundation seminar at the Van Gaalen Cheese Farm in Skeerpoort in the Magaliesberg, a worthwhile place to visit. The president, secretary and Foundation officer are expected to attend. We'll discuss this on Wednesday as well.
Saturday, 26 November: Second club assembly at Twickenham Guest House, where the main topic, led by Rtn Ian Widdop, will be on leadership within the club.
Friday, 9 December: Annual Christmas Party fundraiser
