A Busy Week for Busy People

It has been a busy week for the New Dawn club starting with the first Club Assembly of Carol's term, a board meeting bright and early for breakfast yesterday morning and of course the regular meeting tomorrow morning.
     The assembly was quite well attended. Carol chose as her theme for the meeting a brainstorming session about fundraising, posing the question: how can the fund find a single annual fundraiser that would see it through for the year.

     Carol had asked Julian Nagy to set guidelines for the topic, which he did and then went round the room asking each member present for their ideas for sustainable, meaningful (at least R100 000) fundraising events which are within the resources of the club.
     Judy Sligcher won the prize for the most bright ideas, but there were quite a few meaningful contributions from, amongst others, Mike MacDonald, Greg Smith, Judy Symons, Sam Deverneuil and Paul Kasango.

     Julian has already sent out a list of all the ideas that were tabled and will now sift through them until we can eventually narrow it down to something achievable, but still going for the Wow! Factor.
     It was a lively discussion fuelled by red wine and very yummy soup by Linda, lasagne by Carol and even some pud courtesy of the Twickenham Guest House staff.

     The board meeting was an opportunity to revisit the spirit in which the assembly was held and to discuss general club business.
     The financials for the previous Rotary year have been tabled and will be sent to the club for discussion.
     There is a speaker tomorrow, so the first business meeting of the new term will be Wednesday, the 16th of August.
     Please note that the 9th is a public holiday, so there will be no meeting. There is a fifth Wednesday this month (30th August) and we'll be discussing plans for that, most likely a visit to the Portuguese restaurant down south suggested by Debbie Smith.
     The idea is for members to invite friends and family who are potential Rotarians along, as August is Membership month.

     Damian Lahoud, president of the Midrand NextGen club, will be the speaker at tomorrow's meeting.
     He'll be talking about how the club came to being and how they approach their membership.
     New Dawn is one of their sponsoring clubs (we put up the money for all their badges, insignia, etc.) so please try to get to the meeting and hear what promises to be an interesting session.

More Dates to Remember
     The Golf Day on 10th November is fast approaching and there is an appeal for ever single one in the club to get at least four golfers to participate. The more players we have, the more success there will be with raising funds.
     We also need prizes and sponsorships to attract golfers, so please approach anyone you know and start twisting arms.
     The raffle will also be launched soon and needs prizes to excite people.
     And of course last but not least, the Barrow(s) of Booze need filling!
     The annual Christmas dinner is on 8 December and all ideas for the menu, a venue, the guest list, anything of that nature will be welcome.
